Eddie Tries to Help/You Could Be Famous*
Davey woke up singing an old country song he knew:
“I’m just like a kid in a candy store.
I don’t know what I came here for
Cause everything I see
Looks sweet to me.”
He leapt out of bed and made for the door. He was outside smelling the musk of early morning. He saw a butterfly with shimmering blue wings. It darted and leapt in the crystal sky. “I could do that,” chirped Davey. And he threw out his arms and spun and fluttered his toes. He touched the grass lightly. He twisted and surprised himself with sudden glimpses of clouds and tree limbs.
But Davey tired. His arms began to ache, his knee was sore. He landed badly on an ankle. “Enough of that,” said Davey quietly (he told himself.) And he flopped down, exhausted. He heard voices. The raised voices of children (yelling) nearby. “No, you don’t,” said one. “Yes, I can,” said another. “Sure, ‘cause you’re a cheater!” “I didn’t cheat!”
“I can help,” thought Davey to himself. I know I can. I was made for this.” Davey got up and found the children. “What’s going on, little friends?” he asked, wide-eyed, smiling.
